January 2, 2006

Each week i am going to list topics which occur to me as we read; please feel free to chip in and suggest book or website resources, or anything you do, which are in any way relevant!

Stories…World - koalas, gum trees, tribal living, Australia.

Greek Myths - where is Greece, start Greek God list, discuss uses of fire.

I’ll add more as i go through the week; whatever order you are reading in, i’ll be glad to have your remarks and ideas :)

  1. We did the Gogmagog story today and looked at where Greece and Troy are on a world map. There was a little bit about Troy in an Usborne Greek and Norse legends book we have, so we might look further at that if we get round to it. Then he narrated the story back to me and drew a picture (but I had to read the story a 2nd time cos he missed alot of understanding first time through)

  5. We did Aboriginal art work when we read Strong Magic- on black card with metallic and normal oil pastels. Also looked up about Kangaroos in other books.

  6. We’re doing some Aboriginal art today with Strong Magic too. Mark’s narrated the story and is decorating round the edge of the print out with black snakes and fish and when that’s dried he’s going to do some dots on it with while and gold. There’s a page in the Usborne Art Ideas book with info on it, if anyone would find that useful.

  7. I like these ideas - we’ve done that story too today. We also did a bit on Australia last year - here is the link to the post i made that has photos of the art kath describes.

We did the poems from the Read me book last night - one nice one in the style of the Journey of the Magi and also a short one on the months of the year that we might copy out and illustrate.
